What to Expect from Colon Cleansing
Some people claim that colon cleansing is the miracle cure for everything from asthma to overweight. Others claim that it is unnecessary, overpriced and even dangerous. But before performing a colon cleanse, it's important to know what to expect from the procedure.
Powdered Supplements
Be sure to read the instructions in order to anticipate the duration of the cleansing process. You will want to stay home, near the bathroom, for the duration of the cleanse.
Many practitioners recommend making some dietary changes prior to undergoing a colon cleanse. These changes include cutting back on red meat, drinking more water, and adding more fiber-rich foods. Immediately prior to the cleansing, you will begin fasting, taking only the powdered supplement mixed with liquid.
You may experience some cramping and discomfort. Your sleep may be disrupted. You may experience dizziness or weakness. You may feel hungry, or even feel nauseous. It may help to drink extra water to prevent dehydration.
Colon Hydrotherapy
In this procedure, warm filtered water is gently introduced into the colon through disposable plastic tubing. At the same time, a second tube is used to remove the waste. Each procedure can last for an hour, and will cost from $35 to $175. Home units are available for about $600, a cost-effective alternative if you plan many repeated treatments.
Therapists should be certified or licensed, and equipment, premises and procedures should be clean and sterile. You may want to check your local consumer advocate agency or Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no unresolved complaints involving the provider.
Many people find colon hydrotherapy to be embarrassing and uncomfortable. However, many feel that benefits outweigh the discomfort. While opponents claim the procedure is habit forming, proponents say that the process itself is not habit forming, but feeling good and looking good make it worthwhile.
Lifestyle Changes
Most practitioners advise lifestyle changes to follow up cleansing sessions. These changes include eating less red meat, drinking more water, and adding more fiber to the diet with whole grains and vegetables.
Repeat Procedures
The recommended frequency of colon cleanse is highly dependent upon the individual's diet. If the diet contains adequate fiber, one can do a cleanse every six months. If the diet is low in fiber, every four months is a better schedule.
Only you and your doctor can determine if you might find colon cleansing to be worthwhile for you. Carefully review the claims made for the benefits of colon cleansing (some of them are conflicting), research your alternatives, and proceed with caution. Notify your doctor immediately of any adverse reactions.
Whether you use an herbal supplement or hydrotherapy, you may want to keep a diary of your results to help determine whether or not you want to continue the regimen.
